Characteristics and Usage Process of High-Speed Steel Rolls
High-speed steel rolls are a rapidly developing and widely used hot-rolled material in recent years. They are alloy steels with relatively complex compositions. They can be hardened. The working layer material uses high-carbon steel, and the roll core material uses ductile iron, graphite steel, or forged steel. Two different materials are combined through centrifugal casting or CPC technology. The matrix structure is generally tempered martensite + bainite + carbide, and the carbides are distributed in a highly dispersed form in the matrix, so it has very high wear resistance and toughness, making turning difficult. So, let's learn about the characteristics and usage process of high-speed steel rolls.
Characteristics of high-speed steel rolls:
Good thermal stability, good hardenability, high carbide hardness, easy to form an oxide film, good resistance to thermal cracking and wear resistance, and the requirements for cooling water are far lower than those of cemented carbide. The single-groove rolling capacity can reach 45 times that of cast iron rolls. It is conducive to the negative tolerance control of rolled materials and improves the surface quality of rolled materials. It is mainly aimed at the application of online bar products and pre-frame products, as well as the development of new materials for slitting pre-cutting and slitting passes. The hardness can reach HSD78-90, with high wear resistance, good impact resistance, and good resistance to thermal fatigue. With the popularization of high-speed steel rolls in online bar rolling mills, R&D and manufacturing manufacturers have rapidly expanded. However, the alloying elements added by various manufacturers during the casting process of high-speed steel rolls are different. Therefore, the cutting difficulty is high in processing and use. The degree and effect of online use are not exactly the same, generally containing tungsten, molybdenum, chromium, vanadium, niobium and other carbide-forming elements.
Usage process of high-speed steel rolls:
During the use of high-speed steel rolls, the cooling of the roll body needs to use clean low-temperature water to ensure water pressure and water volume. In this way, the roll body produces thermal cracks due to overheating, and the expansion of thermal cracks leads to roll body spalling, while reducing the structural phase transformation of the roll body caused by excessive roll body temperature. The ideal cooling system should have multiple nozzles arranged in a ring around the groove to ensure continuous and sufficient water flow to the rolling groove. The general water temperature does not exceed 40℃, the water pressure is controlled at 0.4MPa-0.6MPa, the single-cylinder water volume is not less than 300L/min-500L/min, and 70%-80% of the water volume is guaranteed on the outlet side. The water flow should be aimed at the roll groove to avoid scattering. In addition, high-speed steel rolls are highly sensitive to thermal cracks. Before the roll contacts the red steel, the cooling water needs to be turned on in advance to cool the roll groove.
